Second Step

Second Step

Second Step® is a research-based social-emotional learning program used by public and private schools across the country. Designed to improve children’s social-emotional skills, St. Bernard’s Elementary uses Second Step from Pre-K to Grade 8.

This program is focused on supporting and encouraging skills all students need to take on learning challenges, to make good decisions, to manage strong emotions, and to get along with others. It is critical that all children have opportunities to expand social-emotional skills in areas of emotion management, impulse control, problem solving, and empathy. Second Step skills and concepts are designed to help children both in and out of school.

Themes will include the following:

Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting: Students learn how to pay attention and manage distractions, develop a growth mindset, and apply goal-setting strategies to their social and academic lives.

Emotion Management: Students learn how to identify and label emotions and use emotion management strategies—including stress management for older students—to calm strong feelings.

Empathy & Kindness: Students learn how to recognize kindness and act kindly, have empathy for others and take others’ perspectives, and recognize kind acts and empathy as important elements of building and maintaining relationships.

Problem-Solving: Students learn how to identify and state a problem, recognize if a problem is an accident, and use the STEP problem-solving process:

S: Say the problem

T: Think of solutions

E: Explore the outcomes

P: Pick a solution

Second Step is a part of St. Bernard’s Elementary School’s commitment to educating the whole child from Pre-K to Grade 8. This program is staffed by our School Counselors. All STB counselors and faculty from Pre-K to Grade 8 hold Certificates of Completion certifying completion of online training for Second Step: Skills for Social and Academic Success. This program and the professional development have been grant funded.
